In a nutshell, here are the basic authority and duties you accept by filling a role in the organization. You can read them in more detail in the Holacracy constitution.
- Using your best judgement, you can do anything that makes sense to you to enact your role’s purpose or accountabilities, as long as it doesn’t violate a domain or a policy.
Your basic duties, to do regularly:
- Review your role’s purpose and accountabilities, then spin up new projects and actions that you think make sense to express them.
- Process “tensions” that you sense in your role. It may mean taking new projects and actions, or bringing issues to governance. It’s up to you, the only thing you may NOT do is ignore those tensions.
- Track your projects and actions in an external list (i.e. not in your mind), regularly review and update that list, and share it with other circle members upon request.
Providing transparency upon request:
- Give a current estimate of when you’ll start or be done with an action or project. Note: a current estimate is NOT a commitment or a deadline! You can only give your best estimate based on present information. You should still continue prioritizing your work based on what’s most important.
- Report on checklist items and metrics assigned to your role
- When asked, process an accountability into projects or actions if you don't have one, or state what’s in your way of doing so
- When asked to take a specific project or action, you must consider whether it would make sense to take it for your role. If yes, you must accept it. If not, you must explain why or capture another project or action that would make sense to you.
- If your role controls a Domain and another role wants to impact it, you must consider the request and allow it unless you have an Objection.
General prioritization rules:
- Prioritize your time in order to work on the most important projects/actions on your list. It’s up to you to decide what’s most important, however you must align with prioritization guidelines from a circle’s Lead Link or any duly defined strategy, if any. You must also be transparent with your prioritization decisions upon request.
- Prioritize processing messages from other circle members over doing your own work (processing here means doing all the above).
On request, you must prioritize attending a circle meeting over other circle work, unless you already have something scheduled.
